What Happens When People Try Other Things Instead of Going to Therapy

Maybe you have tried to push back the waves of emotion that roll and crash in your heart from time to time. You’ve stuffed down the emotions that are hard to understand. The overthinking in your mind becomes a constant flood of racing thoughts that you can’t turn off. So you think therapy but you have an okay day so you don’t schedule your appointment. It works for a while but then you’re triggered. Someone says something, you hear a song. Someone standing at your desk at just the right time asks “are you okay?” and before you know it you feel your tear ducts about to explode.

You know you need to go to therapy but you’ve been putting it off. You’ve thought about it but haven’t committed. Even reading this post (don’t you dare click off) is another attempt at considering going to counseling

If you are reading this it probably means you’ve been thinking about going to therapy. There is a ton of information out there to help you heal. If you are recovering from Narcissistic abuse, working to overcome paralyzing anxiety, or finding strength while facing debilitating depression there is a lot of information floating around out there online. It takes a brave person to show up in the counseling session to work through the difficulties of life. Videos, self-help books, and talking with family and friends are all additional resources to support you in your healing journey but there’s nothing like therapy. Find out what happens when you try substitutes instead of going to therapy and the possible risk of not receiving professional help. Avoiding therapy isn’t the best option for overcoming the problems of life. Let me break it down for you.

Signs you are avoiding therapy and the risk

Bookmarking articles for future reading about the difficulties you are experiencing in your own life. You may not read all the posts you have saved, leaving you stuck in a space that does not promote healing.

Watching videos online and scouring the internet looking for support about the specific problem you are having currently. You’ve watched someone else talk about it, you can feel validated, and have more understanding but it doesn’t allow you to fully work through your personal struggles.

Secretly liking posts or agreeing with personal post likes and hearts but not seeing actual progress in your own life. So, you keep re-reading the quotes, write them on your mirror and say them to others but you still haven’t fully processed your own experience.

Saving tons of saved quotes from online social media platforms hoping to be encouraged by seeing the positive messages. They are great reminders but there’s still more support needed.

Frequently reading blog posts for answers and insight about problems you are experiencing in your life. Reading the blog post is helpful but talking through the issues and having real conversations is transformative for your healing process. (Bypass the fact you are reading this blog.)

Infinite internet searches, stacks of self-help books and journals halfway used or never touched resting in a corner space in your home. Information overload, so you’ve searched and saved tons of information but don’t know what to do with all of it.

You can try the substitutes but…

You can watch a million online videos about a subject matter and it still doesn’t replace the power of sitting and discussing what you have personally experienced. The resources are informative but you still need more. There’s nothing like having a supportive discussion about your specific concerns with a trained professional.

I get it, a lot of times as a counselor for 10 plus years I’ve heard my fair share of “why would someone talk to a stranger, or why can’t I just talk with my family or friends?” You can do that. Certainly, they are a part of your support system. In addition, having a counselor to support you from a non-bias perspective is priceless.

Of course, I share bazillions of posts online about self-love, self-confidence, and other key elements. I do this to help people become even more informed about living quality lives. That still does not replace the importance of going to therapy. Online social media posts and videos aren’t enough. It takes sitting with feelings, facing issues, exploring emotions, and more. Having the support of your counselor is such an awesome resource to have in your life, no matter where you are in your healing journey.

Temporary fixes are just that, temporary fixes

The level of clarity my clients come away from sessions with is beyond amazing. Working with people as they take their issues from pain to peace and trouble to triumph is one of my favorite parts of counseling. It’s also great to hear people say I’ve never thought about it like that before or those ah-ha moments that change their lives is priceless.

The problems may become worse

The problems could get worse. Not what you want to read, and at the same time, it’s a lot of people’s biggest fear. What if the anxiety never stops, what if I never learn how to deal with the depression. The thought of never having overcome the trauma from the past narcissistic relationship impacts every relationship they have from now on in life
